How many winemakers can you fit into a Volkswagen Beetle?
This question was answered on Friday afternoon, when 11 of the Helderberg's finest managed to fit into the Somerset West Round Table's VW Beetle "Noddy Car"!
Under the "expert" direction of winemaker, Corius Visser from Croydon wines, (who got the job as he had attempted the same around 10 years ago when a student at Elsenburg!), the enthusiastic group squeezed, shoved, pushed and pulled themselves into the car to celebrate the launch of the annual Helderberg Wine Festival (Thu, 21 Oct-Sun, 24 Oct), which raises funds for Round Table and other charities in the region.
With 32 cellars participating, each offering a special programme of events to suit its facilities, festival goers can expect spectacular scenery and stunning architecture as a backdrop to enjoying some of the best wines in South Africa.
A new event on the programme is the quaintly named "Vergenoegd Volksies & Vere Expo" where this historical winery just off the N2 are inviting all owners of a Volkswagen Beetle to the farm on Saturday, 23 October to participate in a mass Volksie exhibition!
Participating wineries are: Alto, Annandale, Avontuur, Bilton, Blaauwklippen, Croydon, Dornier, Eikendal, Ernie Els, Equitania Wines, Grangehurst, Heron Ridge, Journey's End, Ken Forrester, Kleine Zalze, Kleinood, Longridge, Lourensford, Lyngrove, Miravel, Morgenster, Peter Falke, Post House, Romond, Somerbosch, Stellenzicht, Stonewall, Uva Mira, Vergenoegd, Waterkloof, Yonder Hill, Zandberg.
